Victorious Rawat Hails Judiciary, Seeks Centre's Help for Uttarakhand

Battling the political upheaval in Uttarakhand, Congress leader Harish Rawat on Wednesday emerged triumphant in the floor test and proved his majority in the Assembly. The Centre revoked President's Rule in the state and teh Supreme Court ruled that Rawat can take over as the Chief Minister.

"I am grateful to the honourable Supreme Court. The honourable judiciary with its clear decision has given a moral boost to democracy in India," a triumphant Rawat said while Congress workers celebrated the party's return to power after several weeks of uncertainty.

Exuding confidence, Rawat claimed that the SC decision has restored the faith of people in democracy in Uttarakhand. The soon-to-be CM asserted that he will try and forget the "bad patch" and start afresh to take the state forward.

Dismissing allegations of sting operations against him, he said that it was all a political conspiracy. "Go into the content of the showcause of the sting and you yourself will be convinced that it was a well-rehearsed conspiracy by certain political parties and individuals," he claimed.

"Judiciary in a way came forward as an adjudicator of constitutional and democratic values. From the Supreme Court to the High Court, I want to thank the judiciary. With this, the trust of people in the constitutional set up has increased further," Rawat said.

Observing that in the past one-and-a-half months the state suffered a lot, Rawat said, "What ends well remains well. And from here, making a new start will be beneficial for the state."

The Congress won the trust vote clinching 33 votes while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could manage only 28 in the 71-member Assembly whose effective strength was reduced to 62 after the Supreme Court barred nine Congress MLAs from taking part in the motion of confidence.

The Assembly's strength came down further to 61 as Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal could have cast his vote only in case of a tie.
