UPA has 'scant regard' for constitutional bodies: BJP
BJP welcomed the decision of the Election Commission to issue a notice to the government for enhancing the cap in LPG cylinder suibsidy ahead of elections in Gujarat.

New Delhi: BJP on Tuesday charged the UPA government with having "scant regard" for Constitutional bodies and welcomed the decision of the Election Commission to issue a notice to the government for enhancing the cap in LPG cylinder suibsidy ahead of elections in Gujarat.

"BJP feels it is a matter of great satisfaction that EC has acted and issued a suo motu notice taking cognizance of Petroleum Minister M Veerappa Moily's statement on increasing the cap in LPG cylinders," party spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said in New Delhi.

He said the government, "despite being shamed" by EC on cash subsidy transfer scheme, has remained obstinate about challenging the Constitutional bodies.

"UPA has scant regard for Constitutional bodies and it is amply reflected by the statement on cylinder subsidy...Congress is struggling to lure voters in Gujarat by making such announcements...but its desperate bid will have no influence on the voters there," Rudy said.

Taking suo moto cognizance of reports of the Centre's move ahead of Gujarat assembly polls to increase the cap on subsidised LPG cylinders, the Election Commission has directed it to stop the same forthwith.
