UDF leaders accused V S Achuthanandan had allegedly interfered in judicial matters.

Thiruvananthapuram: Leaders of the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala on Monday submitted a memorandum to Governor R S Gavai, alleging Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan had "violated of oath of office by interfering in judicial matters."

In a memorandum, UDF leaders alleged Achuthanandan had written to the President in 2006, recommending the name of Justice V K Bali for appointment as Supreme Court judge, which amounted to a violation of the oath.

It also mentioned the allegation against the Chief Minister by former CPI-M state committee member P Sasi that the former had tried to influence the judicial commission which probed the 2000 Kalluvathukkal hooch tragedy with the intention of implicating him (Sasi) in the case.

Such interference in judicial matters also amounted to a violation of the oath of office, the memorandum charged. It said the government had not responded when serious corruption charges were made by the Opposition in and outside the assembly.

Later talking to reporters, Chandy said the Governor had assured that he would look into the matter. He said the Opposition would submit in writing to the Chief Minister on March 2, 2011 details of the charges made against him and his son V A Arun Kumar and demand a comprehensive probe.

Chandy described as 'ridiculous' Achuthanandan's statement that an inquiry would be ordered into the allegations if the Opposition provided proof. "There is every chance that if proof is given, it will be destroyed," Chandy said.

He said those facing charges should not dictate terms and reiterated that the government was not sincere on the demand for a CBI probe into illegal operations of lotteries of other states in Kerala.
