Kumaraswamy's inclusion in the Cabinet materialised as a result of the JD(S) alliance with the BJP

Two-time Chief Minister and five-time MLA, JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy, took oath as a minister in the third term of the Narendra Modi-led NDA government. This marks Kumaraswamy’s debut as a Central government minister.

The son of JD(S) patriarch and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda has clinched a cabinet berth by aligning with the BJP, amidst his party’s struggle for survival.

Since its founding in 1999, the JD(S) has never formed a government independently in Karnataka. However, it has been in power twice in coalition with both national parties, despite being a junior partner.

The party governed for 20 months alongside the BJP from February 2006 and for 14 months with the Congress following the May 2018 assembly polls. Kumaraswamy served as Chief Minister on both occasions.

In the Mandya Lok Sabha seat in Karnataka, the 64-year-old former CM not only succeeded in reclaiming the JD(S)’s former stronghold but also showcased the party’s enduring influence in Karnataka through its alliance with the BJP. Kumaraswamy secured victory over Venkataramane Gowda of the Congress by an impressive margin of 2,84,620 votes.

Kumaraswamy’s inclusion in the Cabinet materialised as a result of the JD(S) alliance with the BJP. Together, they secured victory in 19 constituencies in the state during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Among these, the BJP claimed 17 seats, while the JD(S) emerged victorious in two constituencies.

Taking to social media platform on Sunday, Kumaraswamy shared, “Expressing profound gratitude to the people of Mandya Lok Sabha constituency, all Kannadigas, and to all workers and supporters of Janata Dal (Secular) and BJP Karnataka, who have been instrumental in providing opportunities for national service in this auspicious moment.”

Joining Kumaraswamy, other non-BJP parties from the NDA alliance have also found representation in the Modi 3.0 cabinet. Below is the list of names and their respective parties:

  • Pratap Rao Jadhav (Shiv Sena)
  • Ram Das Athawale (Republican Party of India)
  • Jayant Choudhary (RLD)
  • Chirag Paswan (Lok Janshakti Party-Ram Vilas)
  • Jitan Ram Manjhi (Hindustani Awam Morcha)
