SP held protests across Uttar Pradesh on the issue of price rise and corruption.

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party (SP) on Tuesday held protests across Uttar Pradesh on the issue of price rise and corruption, as its chief Mulayam Singh Yadav led the agitation in Lucknow before being taken into custody for violating prohibitory

orders.

The SP chief marched along with his party workers and staged a sit-in at the main Hazratganj area in Lucknow before being taken into custody by the police.

Yadav rode in a city bus to the police lines, enthusing his workers.

Police also baton charged protesting workers to prevent them from marching to the district magistrate's office, injuring several of them.

Party spokesman Rajendra Chaudhury claimed the agitation had been a success with workers all over the state holding protests in a forceful manner.

He alleged the BSP government in the state resorted to "undemocratic ways to suppress the political agitation."

SP leaders said that Tuesday's agitation showed the party was a force to reckon with in UP politics despite some recent developments in the organisation, particularly Amar Singh quitting all party posts.
