The Samajwadi Party on Thursday tried to blame an "outsider" - an apparent reference to Amar Singh - for the rift in the Yadav family that has plunged the party into a crisis over the last three days.
SP leader Ramgopal Yadav, without taking the name of the newly inducted Rajya Sabha member, said the open fight between Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and his uncle Shivpal Yadav was due to the interference of someone outside the SP first family.
"People are exploiting the good nature of Mulayam Singh Yadav. One Sahib concerned had always tried to damage the party. Workers are demanding action against him. We will see if things go out of hand. Something needs to be done," Ramgopal said.
Amar Singh has already denied he has any role in the crisis in the SP.
The crisis in the SP broke out on Tuesday with Akhilesh stripping his uncle Shivpal of key ministerial portfolios, hours after his removal as the party's state unit chief and appointment of the latter in his place.
SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav is trying for a patch-up between Akhilesh and Shivpal and is set to meet the chief minister over this.
"Everything will be resolved once Mulayam and Akhilesh Yadav speak to each other. Mulayam spoke to Akhilesh but did not tell him that he was being removed as state party president. This was a mistake," Ramgopal said.
Ramgopal negated reports of Akhilesh being made the national working president of the SP and refused to comment on when the ministers sacked by the CM will be reinstated.
Shivpal has conveyed to Mulayam that he needs all his ministerial portfolios back, sources said.
According to the sources, Shivpal told Mulayam that Akhilesh can remain as UP SP president. The sources said that Shivpal told his elder brother Mulayam that he wants to work at same level as Akhilesh to ensure the party wins in 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
