Sitaram Yechury slams Modi government, says UPA's Land Bill was better

New Delhi: Amidst outrage over the controversial Land Acquisition Bill, CPIM leader Sitaram Yechury on Monday hit out at the Centre government over the proposed legislation. He said the Narendra Modi government is fooling the farmers and UPA's Land Bill was much better than the NDA's.

"BJP supported UPA's Land Bill and voted for it in last Parliament. BJP now wants to dilute the farmer compensation, rehabilitation clause," Yechury said.

"Left wanted stronger land law last time, BJP never supported us," he added.

He accepted the government's challenge of having a debate on Land Bill and asserted that laws can only be made in Parliament.

The opposition parties are against the Bill accusing the BJP-led NDA government of bulldozing its way through in Parliament.

After the Modi government took over in May 2014, it decided to make some amendments in the Bill which have become a bone of contention.

While the UPA's Act of 2013 stated that land can be acquired for private companies, the NDA ordinance and the subsequent bill introduced on February 26 in Lok Sabha replaced the term 'private company' with private entity.

Leaders from Congress, Samajwadi Party (SP), Trinamool Congress (TMC), CPIM and CPI were among the parties which have submitted a memorandum against the new Land Acquisition Bill to President Pranab Mukherjee.
