Salman writes to EC, says quota a manifesto issue
The Law Minister says he respects the Election Commission for the decision it takes, calling the issue unfortunate.

New Delhi: Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid, who has been facing the Election Commission heat over the issue of minority quota, on Monday wrote to the constitutional body. He told the election body that he respects the institution and also the Election Commission for the decision it takes.

The Law Minister further mentioned in his letter that the minority quota was a manifesto issue, calling the entire controversy unfortunate.

Meanwhile, action against Khurshid, as demanded by the election commission for his defiance on the issue appeared unlikely.

Reports had earlier suggested that the Congress leader could issue a statement signaling that he had no intention to hurt the EC, which the party hoped could lead to a closure on the issue.

Addressing a press conference, Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari had said, "Don't try and stretch it too far."
