Tensions are mounting in Osmania University in Hyderabad, as students have decided to defy the court order and go ahead with the beef festival. While Hyderabad police detained 10 students last on Wednesday night, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Raja Singh, who has condemned the event, has been taken into preventive custody.

"We will stop the beef festival. It is against our culture. Law and order will not be disturbed. The Police Commissioner has said that they will arrest the people who will organise this festival. This is a dirty political game by government to play with hindu sentiments," Raja Singh said.

A 'curfew-like' situation prevailed on the campus with heavy police security being deployed in the campus. The main entrance has been closed down and only students with ID cards are being allowed to go inside.

Meanwhile, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has announced to counter the beef festival by organising a pork festival.

A city civil court had passed the status quo order three days back, which amounts to staying the holding of the festivals, on a petition filed by an advocate. The petition contended that these events are in violation of Cruelty Towards Animal Act and Cow Slaughter Act, and hurt the religious sentiments of the people. The order was later upheld by the High Court. However, the defiant students said that they would go ahead with the event as planned.

Large scale violence was witnessed when beef festival was organised on the campus by a section of students in 2011, 2012 and 2014, said the petition.

Osmania University, one of the oldest educational institutions of higher learning, has already clarified that activities unrelated to academics, including 'beef festival', 'pork festival' and 'gau-puja' would not be permitted on the campus.
