Chennai: Actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth launched a scathing attack on Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala on Sunday, saying the 15 days’ time initially granted to the BJP to prove majority amounted to “mockery of democracy”.
Addressing reporters after meeting the women’s wing of his Rajini Makkal Mandram, the actor termed the subsequent developments in Karnataka, wherein BS Yeddyurappa resigned as CM without a floor test, as a “win for democracy”.
“What happened in Karnataka yesterday was a win for democracy. The BJP asking for some more time and the Governor giving 15 days’ time was a mockery of democracy. I would like to thank the Supreme Court for its order, which upheld the democracy,” Rajinikanth said.
"Hats off to the Supreme Court which gave a good ruling," he said, apparently referring to the apex court asking the BJP to take the floor test to prove its majority in the House on Saturday.
Reflecting on his own party’s future plans, Rajinikanth said it was “too early” to take a call on 2019 Lok Sabha elections or political alliances. “The decision on contesting elections in 2019 will be when elections are announced. The party is not yet launched, but we are ready for anything. Also, it is too early to talk about any kind of alliance,” the actor-turned-neta said.
Rajinikanth added that whichever party comes to power in the state, should implement the Supreme Court order on Cauvery river water sharing in “full letter and spirit”.
Karnataka Chief Minister-designate HD Kumaraswamy dismissed Rajinikanth's concern saying "he is not a person from the government". Kumaraswamy said, "I'm not going to take his comment on Cauvery issue seriously as he is not a person from the government. As a common citizen, I request Rajinikanth to come and see the water storage in the reservoirs and suffering of our farmers, then he will change his mind."
