New Delhi: Sending an un-ambiguous message to potential and current Congress allies, Congress Parliamentary Party leader Sonia Gandhi has said that son Rahul Gandhi “is my boss too”, indicating where the buck stops when it comes to taking political calls on key issues in the party.
Sonia was addressing the Congress Parliamentary Party meeting on Thursday morning in Delhi, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi tore into the Congress while intervening in the debate on President’s address in both Houses of Parliament.
After demitting office of the Congress President in December last year, Sonia Gandhi remains the leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party, while Rahul is in-charge of the party.
As Opposition gears up for polls next year and alliance talks gain momentum, a section of the old guards in the opposition ranks have been reluctant to deal with the Gandhi scion for political negotiations.
Both Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee and NCP chief Sharad Pawar have been more comfortable in dealing with Sonia.
Pawar, in fact, had taken the lead in uniting Opposition by organising a march in Mumbai last month.
On the other hand, Congress’ attempt to call a meeting of all opposition parties ahead of the Budget Session evoked a tepid response from a section of the non-BJP parties.
Sensing ‘winds of change’, Sonia Gandhi in her address to Congress legislators said the elections may be called earlier than scheduled.
Warning that attempts to polarise would be made ahead of the Karnataka Assembly polls, Sonia accused the Modi government of “arrogance and dis-honesty which tells us that the government is out of touch with the reality”.
