Amritsar: Protests have broken out in Amritsar a day after Akali Dal leader Mukhjeet Singh Hundal was killed in a police encounter.

Locals are demanding that a case of murder be filed against the erring policemen and that they should be immediately arrested.

"It only makes sense to file a murder case. Those men have to be arrested. We are sure he did not fight with police. They are lying. Do you think he was strong enough to challenge them? He was a public man and had just come back from a deputation," SAD leader Upkar Singh Sandhu said.

According to sources, the police thought they were engaged in an encounter with wanted criminal Jagdeep Singh Jaggu. Later, they claimed that they had killed the SAD leader accidentally.

However, the victim's relative claims that he was killed after an argument. "The culprits shot him and ran away. The police has conducted no investigation till now. They haven't arrested anyone. Police officials were involved in the killing. They surrounded his car and shot at him," Hundal's relative said.
