New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi used the term ‘vikas’ 25 times in an almost 30-minute long victory speech at the BJP headquarters in Delhi, underlining his vision for the country and the kind of politics that he champions.
Modi first used vikas in the speech to give credit to vikas for BJP’s victory in both Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat.
He then moved on to castigating those who made fun of vikas and tried their best to derail BJP’s winning streak based on vikas and also said that vikas of Gujarat is vikas of the country.
Towards the end of his speech he made the audience chant, ‘jeetega bhai jeetenga, vikas hi jeetega’.
Before him, BJP national president Amit Shah also stressed that it was Modi's vikasvaad which trumped Congress' jaativaad (casteism).
The overarching theme of the speech was vikas. He called Gujarat election victory a miracle where his party beat anti-incumbency. He acknowledged the work of his karyakartas, he said they maintained the confidence of the voters even after he left for the bigger role.
Modi focused on aspirations of the young and said that his term as the PM is characterised by the aspirations of people and middle class, who earlier thought of just making adjustments in the face of lack of facilities and opportunities.
The BJP won 99 seats in Gujarat, while the Congress won 77. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani registered a win in Rajkot West and so did Deputy CM Nitin Patel from Mehsana. Dalit activist Jignesh Mevani scored also won from Vadgam. In Himachal Pradesh, BJP won a majority with 44 seats and condemned the Congress to play the role of the opposition.
“This is not an ordinary victory. It's special. Some people can't digest BJP victory, don't waste your time on them and just focus on New India by 2022,” Modi said.
