PDP wants confidence-building measures, BJP asks Governor for time
PDP, with 27 MLAs in the 87-member Assembly and BJP with 25 legislators, ran a coalition government headed by Mufti Sayeed for 10 months before his demise on January 7.

Jammu: PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday continued to play hardball asking the Centre to announce confidence-building measures ahead of government formation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Talking to reporters after meeting Governor NN Vohra , Mehbooba said the state needed a "good atmosphere, space and a fillip" if a new government is to be formed.

The Governor had invited Mehbooba and state BJP leaders separately as part of effort to end political uncertainty that has been prevailing in the state for nearly a month since Mufti Sayeed, then Chief Minister, passed away on January 7.

State BJP leaders who met the governor later asked for ten more days to end the political impasse.

Mehbooba said her late father Mufti Sayeed, without bothering about his "political career", had aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the hope that the Centre will bring out the state from the difficult situation it is in.

PDP, with 27 MLAs in the 87-member Assembly and BJP with 25 legislators, ran a coalition government headed by Mufti Sayeed for 10 months before his demise on January 7.

Mehbooba said her father's commitments and vision are "sacred" for her and "if we want to have good government," measures should be taken to create "good atmosphere" for that.

To a question, the PDP chief said there are "no differences" with BJP but such measures should be taken by the Centre which will ensure that Sayeed's absence is not felt.
