Parliamentarians condemn interview of 2012 Delhi gangrape convict: Who said what
MPs raised the issued and demanded that government take strict action in this regard and take effective steps to ensure the safety and security of women.

New Delhi: Parliamentarians unitedly expressed their anger and condemned the interview of one of the convicts of 2012 Delhi gangrape-murder of a young girl, Mukesh Singh, by British filmmaker Leslee Udwin. MPs of both the Houses raised the issued and demanded that government take strict action in this regard and take effective steps to ensure the safety and security of women.

Here is who said what:

Rajnath Singh, Home Minister: The government has obtained a restraining order on broadcasting of film. I am surprised about the circumstances in which such orders (to shoot documentary) were given. When I came to know about this , I was personally very hurt. I will ensure that such a permission is not granted to anyone to interview a rapist. The government condemns December 16 incident and will not allow any group or individual to use the incident for any commercial use. The government is committed to dignity and security of women

The condition was given to shoot the interview for social purpose and no commercial use. A legal notice was issued to them when the jail authorities came to know that it violated the conditions. The permission to shoot the documentray was given with conditions.

Javed Akhtar, nominated member: The anger is not that a convict has been interviewed. The anger is at the thought and sad that is is the mentality of many men. Infact, it is good that this interview was done, at least men will know that they think like rapist and should change their mindset.

Ambika Soni, Congress: It is not only a question on how men think about women, but in this case we were surprised how the permission was given in this case. Don't politicise the matter. We have been demanding that there should be quick trials in such case.

Jaya Bachchan, Samajwadi Party: What action the government will take on ensuring dignity of women?

Naresh Agarwal, Samajwadi Party: The goverment should give specific information.

Mayawati, Bahujan Samaj Party: I request the Home Minister to investigate how permissions to interview the rapist were given.

Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, MoS I&B: The airing of documentary would be contempt of court. This entire documentary is against the programming code of I&B ministry. Language seems to incite violence against women, and instills fear.

KC Tyagi, Janata Dal United: Action should be taken against the DG, Tihar Jail and officials for allowing the interview.

Kirron Kher, BJP: We have to tackle this problem from the grassroot where the mindset is such that you insult women. What is the point of having 'Beti Bachao' when such a mentality exists?

Meenakshi Lekhi, BJP: The documentary is an attempt to find fault with India's legal system.

Venkaiah Naidu, BJP: There is a conspiracy to defame India with such documentary.

What's your reaction?
