New Delhi: The Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government easily survived all the cut motions moved by the Opposition on Tuesday.
With Lalu Yadav and Mulyam Singh Yadav deciding to not vote in favour of the first cut motion moved by Bharatiya Janata Party MP and Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj, the Government faced no difficulty in securing the majority of the Lok Sabha. While 246 MPs voted against the cut motion, only 162 voted in favour of it.
After the cut motion moved by the BJP was defeated, the House agreed to club all the other cut motions. But the other cut motions too were defeated.
In the other cut motions, the Government got the support of 289 MPs while 201 members voted against it.
The cut motions were seen as a virtual trial of strength for the Government. But Congress managers ensured a coup of sorts by getting Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati and her 21 MPs on their side. They also ensured Rashtriya Janata Dal and Samajwadi Party MPs abstained from the vote.
Opposition parties had brought the cut motions to protest Government inability to control prices of essential commodities including fuels and fertilisers.
With all the cut motion defeated, the stage is set for the smooth passage of Union Budget 2010-11.
