Chennai: The large number of freebies the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) regime in Tamil Nadu has announced does not seem to be working for its front, an opinion poll conducted by a private educational institution has revealed.
"The stock of the present government, sitting members of parliament and the satisfaction quotient on the basis of public distribution of rice at Re.1 per kg - all seem to be on the lower side," Raja Nayagam, a professor who supervised the opinion poll conducted by the Loyola College, a premier educational institution, told reporters here on Thursday.
"A little over 52 percent of the population saw no joy in the Re.1 per kg rice as it serves no useful purpose on its own in the light of other essential commodities being costly," Raja Nayagam said.
"Some 87 percent of those interviewed expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of the DMK regime and 63 percent said they would not re-elect the present members of parliament and the state assembly," Raja Nayagam added.
Among political parties, the main opposition All India Anna DMK cornered the largest single percentage of endorsement at 38.3 percent followed by the DMK at 25.8 percent and actor-turned-politician Vijaykanth's Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam got 19.5 percent votes, according to the poll results.
Vijaykanth has indicated that he will attempt to form a third front in Tamil Nadu and the Left parties have shown inclination to consider it.
Despite its poor show in the current opinion polls, the ruling DMK and its main ally - the Congress - seem to be comfortably placed in a triangular contest since together the group has about 41 percent votes while the largest group, the AIADMK, has a little over 38 percent.
The ruling United Progressive Alliance coalition at the centre has 33 members from the DMK (16), the Indian National Congress (9), the Pattali Makkal Katchi (6 including one from Puducherry), and a breakaway faction of the Marumalarchi DMK (2).
