Lucknow: BSP chief Mayawati on Friday said she would probe whether outgoing Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs minister Mohd. Azam Khan destroyed files in his office.
"I condemn the destruction of official record in the office of Azam Khan. I will order a high level probe in the matter as soon as my government is formed," said Mayawati, who is set to be the new UP CM .
Mayawati said she has asked the Director General of Police to visit the office. "I can think over what can be done but only after assuming the power."
The Uttar Pradesh Police after a complaint from the Secretariat on Friday afternoon that papers were being burnt and torn in Azam's office in the state Assembly. Chief Secretary Shambhu Nath ordered the office to be sealed, but the Raj Bhawan has denied that the Governor has given any such order.
UNI reports that Azam’s private secretary told reporters that the Minister asked his staff to destroy files. Azam, who win the Rampur seat, is outgoing CM Mulayam Singh Yadav’s confidante
Yadav, in a controversial move, called a special session of the state Assembly on May 9 to push through a Bill granting minority status to the Mohammad Ali Jauhar University in Singoor in Rampur. The Bill makes Azam the university’s lifelong chancellor.
Yadav stood by Azam when senior Samajwadi Party leader Beni Prasad asked the CM to choose between them.
