New Delhi: An all-party meeting called by the Centre to discuss statehood for Telangana ended without taking any decision on the issue.
Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, who chaired the meeting, went to meet the Prime Minister and apprise him of the outcome soon after the meeting ended on Tuesday afternoon in New Delhi.
"It was a good meeting and everybody expressed their views. It is quite clear that views of political parties are divided. I summed up their views and will take them to the Prime Minister and formulate course of action," said Chidambaram.
"They were keen that consultations should be concluded in a time frame. I appeal to state government and political parties to maintain peace. Political parties are not opposed to the idea of a mechanism being put in place. All political parties have decided there will be further consultation on this issue," added the Home Minister.
The leaders of the eight major political parties of Andhra Pradesh came out of the meet appealing for peace, harmony and law & order in Andhra Pradesh.
"We representatives of eight recognised political parties of Andhra Pradesh attended the meeting convened by the Home Minister. We have expressed our views at the meeting and they have been noted by the Central Government. Meanwhile, it is our earnest appeal that peace, harmony and law and order should be maintained in the state," said a statement signed and issued by Andhra leaders.
All of them said that they would work towards building a consensus on the Telangana issue.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah was non committal when asked if there was a resolution on the Telangana issue in the meeting.
"I have not been in the state for two days. But I have been speaking to the officials. Now the situation is under control," claimed Rosaiah.
While TRS President K Chandrasekhar Rao, spearheading the agitation for a separate state of Telangana said that his party would wait for Centre final stand on the issue, Praja Rajyam Party chief Chiranjeevi reiterated that his party stood for a united Andhra Pradesh.
Andhra BJP chief Bandaru Dattatreya demanded that Congress and United Progressive Alliance should make their stand clear on the issue.
The meeting was attended by representatives of Congress, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India-Marxist, the Praja Rajyam Party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM).
