Trinamool will ‘paralyse’ state for 24 hours for Nandigram’s sake.

Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress will “paralyse” West Bengal with a strike on Wednesday because the government has failed to end violence in Nandigram, party chief Mamata Banerjee has said.

Banerjee alleged CPI-M supporters in Khejuri near Nandigram, where farmers are protesting land acquisition for industries, shot and killed one person and injured another on Tuesday.

"Violence is continuing, so our call for paralysing normal life in the state stands for tomorrow. It will be observed as anti-terrorism Day," PTI quoted Banerjee as saying at press conference.

“We have kept essential services like healthcare, media and the information technology sector outside our agitation. We are forced to do this for the sake of peace, democracy and the right of the people to live (in Nandigram)." The party says its protest is not a bandh.

Banerjee alleged Trinamool legislature party leader Partha Chatterjee was fired upon in Khejuri and Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee didn’t want a solution in Nandigram.

"The top CPM leaders, including the chief minister, are abetting violence in Nandigram. This must stop. I warn them again not to play with fire, as the people have the last word in democracy," she said.

"The Chief Minister talks of political solution but didn't we meet their party leader Jyoti Basu and Forward Bloc leader Ashok Ghosh earlier to bring peace? Are they not political people?" she asked.

Bhattacharjee has asked for more paramilitary forces from the Central government and said a political solution could end the violence in Nandigram, where his government has scrapped a plan to build a special economic zone.
