Kolkata: The Congress-led Opposition's Presidential candidate Meira Kumar termed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as a fighter and a mass leader.

"I had a word with her and she promised to extend her support to me," Kumar said in Kolkata while adding that she was overwhelmed with the affection she got from the Congress MPs and MLAs in Bengal.

Meira Kumar on Tuesday sought support from the legislators and MPs of Trinamool Congress, Left and Congress parties in the state.

"Leaders in Bengal have given me an immense strength and inspiration because it is the land of fighters. The leaders here have always fought against injustice and worked hard for the poor people," Kumar said.

The former Lok Sabha Speaker while recalling her old association with Bengal, said, "This state has always remained my favourite because of the warmth here."

Kumar is contesting against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) nominee Ram Nath Kovind in the July 17 presidential election.

On June 19, hours after BJP sprung a surprise by announcing Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind as its pick for the presidential elections on July 17, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday hinted that TMC is not going to support him.

"I am not, for a moment, saying that the Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind is unfit to be the President. I have spoken to few other Opposition leaders, they are also surprised. There are other big Dalit leaders in the country. Just because he was the leader of Dalit Morcha of BJP they have made him the candidate," she had said.

A presidential election will be held in India on July 17 and counting will be done on July 20, five days before the incumbent President's term expires.

The total strength of electoral college for the presidential polls is 11,04,546 votes and BJP-led NDA's currently standing is nearly 5.38 lakh votes.
