Amid the ongoing seat-sharing talks, the Kalyan and Thane Lok Sabha constituencies have fallen under the control of the Shiv Sena faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Announcing its candidates on Wednesday, the Shinde-led Shiv Sena fielded Shrikant Eknath Shinde and Naresh Ganpat Mhaske from the Kalyan and Thane seats, respectively.
The candidature of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s son Shrikant Shinde has been announced from the Kalyan seat. He is the incumbent MLA from the seat. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Srikanth won for the second time with a huge margin of 3,44,343 votes.
Meanwhile, it was earlier speculated that both BJP and Shiv Sena were eying the Thane constituency with the saffron party putting forward a list of aspirants claiming the seat. However, the Shinde-led Shiv Sena group refused to vacate the seat as this constituency belonged to them.
The Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde on Tuesday nominated Ravindra Waikar, a former aide of Uddhav Thackeray, and Yamini Jadhav as its candidates from Mumbai North West and Mumbai South Lok Sabha seats, respectively, who will face their ex-colleagues from Sena (UBT).
Maharashtra has a total of 48 Lok Sabha seats, the highest after Uttar Pradesh which has 80 parliamentary seats. The state is voting in the first five phases.
Polling in 13 parliamentary constituencies including Ramtek, Nagpur, Bhandara-Gondiya, Gadchiroli-Chimur, Chandrapur, Bhiwandi, Chandrapur, Kalyan, Maval, Nandurbar, Palghar, Raigad, Sangli, Satara, and Yavatmal-Washim has already concluded in the first two phases.
