KV Thomas to meet Sharad Pawar as onion prices touch Rs 100 per kg
The government is banking on imports and fresh domestic arrivals to control prices.

New Delhi: Despite a sharp drop in onion prices at the wholesale markets, retail prices in most cities continue to hover around the Rs 100-mark. Food Minister KV Thomas will meet Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Thursday to discuss the options before the government.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit will also meet both Pawar and Thomas later in the day. The government is banking on imports and fresh domestic arrivals to control prices.

However, Sharad Pawar on Wednesday said that rates will remain high for two to three weeks. Pressing the emergency button the Delhi government is sending a team to Nashik to purchase onions.

According to the data compiled by the Consumer Affairs Ministry, the average price in the major 57 cities stood at Rs 70 per kg with Jammu recording highest at Rs 90 per kg. However, as per the data available from centres, onion is being sold at Rs 100 per kg in Patna and Jammu in retail markets.

In the national capital, Jaipur, Chandigarh and Bangalore, retail prices are ruling at Rs 80-90 per kg. Onions are available in the range of Rs 60 and 80 in Mumbai, Bhopal, Lucknow, Chennai, Guwahati, Srinagar, Imphal and Kolkata.
