Govt considering separate census based on caste
On August 31, the government had accepted demands by political parties to include caste in the ongoing census.

New Delhi: The Home Ministry is proposing a full caste census that would be separate form the census count going on now, sources tell CNN-IBN.

The caste census would be taken up once the current round of population enumeration ends. In it, the census officials will collect caste related information of all residents in addition to their names, addresses.

The Union Cabinet is expected to discuss this in its meeting on Thursday.

On August 31, the UPA Government had accepted demands by several political parties to include caste in the ongoing Census 2011.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee told the Lok Sabha that all political parties had supported the idea of including caste in census and there was no need for any "apprehensions" over the issue.

His statement came after leaders of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), the Janta Dal (United), the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) wanted to know as to what happened to the Government's promise on caste census.
