New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Friday approved bill to hike MPs' salary from current Rs 16,000 to Rs 50,000. If this bill is passed by the Parliament, the salary of MPs would increase by 300 per cent.
The total cost of this increase on the exchequer is expected to be Rs 142 crore. However, there has been no increase in the dearness allowance being given to the MPS. Also, a separate proposal to increase the number of air journeys from 35 to 50 each year has been rejected by the Cabinet.
The panel on MPs' salary had suggested an increase in secretarial allowance from Rs 14,000 to Rs 44,000. The Cabinet has however agreed to an increase of up to Rs 20,000 only.
Last week, the Cabinet had deferred the decision till Monday on the issue after objections to it were raised by some members of the Cabinet. This had lead to leaders of opposition parties like the RJD and the LJP creating a ruckus in Lok Sabha demanding immediate approval by the Cabinet.
Left parties remain opposed to any increase in the salary of members of Parliament.
