New Delhi: The Congress is strongly exploring the possibility of a strategic understanding with the Left ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections.
According to top sources in the Congress, the move comes after feedback from the party's state unit, which favours an alliance with the Left in West Bengal.
Sources further said that the party cannot go for an open alliance because the Congress and the Left are fighting against each other in Kerala.
Congress leaders, who are in charge of West Bengal, are slated to submit a report on the political equations to the party high command.
According to West Bengal Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary, workers of both the Congress and the Left parties want an alliance and look at it as the "only way to defeat" the ruling party.
"Congress and left workers irrespective of the opinion of their own party leaders are of the view that forging an alliance is the only way to defeat the ruling Trinamool Congress government," said Chaudhary.
He added, "If the Congress and Left unite together, then the political scenario will undergo a drastic change."
