New Delhi: The Congress on Monday complained to the Election Commission on the release of the poll manifesto by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on a day the elections began.
The BJP released its manifesto promising to rid India of corruption and bring it back on the path of development. However, it came on a day when two of India's states - Assam and Tripura - went to vote.
"The manifesto should have been announced before he date of announcement of polls. The Election Commission should restrain the BJP from publicising the manifesto. The manifesto talks about building Ram Mandir which violates the principle of secularism," the Congress stated in its complaint.
Speaking to CNN-IBN, Chief Election Commissioner HS Brahma, however, said that there is no bar on when a manifesto can be issued. He, however, added that a party cannot publicise it in states which go to polls.
