Reset Any SMOK Mod: Clear Puff Count, Factory Reset, & More
Is your SMOK vape acting up? Whether you want to reset the puff counter, fix errors about ohms being too high or low, or try to restore your SMOK box mod back to its original factory settings, we can help! This wikiHow tutorial will teach you 4 easy ways to reset the most popular SMOK advanced mods and pod mods, and show you how to perform a factory reset and firmware update on mods like the Mag, G-Priv and Morph.
Things You Should Know
  • If you're getting "ohms too high" or "ohms too low" errors, remove the tank, clean the 510 connectors, and press the fire button to reset the resistance.
  • To reset the puff count, select Puff Clear or Puff Reset from the menu, or press the Fire and Down buttons, depending on your model.
  • Most mods can be reset to factory defaults by removing the battery and pressing the Up and Down buttons together.

Reset the Tank

Remove the tank from your mod. If you're getting the "ohms too low" or "ohms too high" error even when using the recommended wattage for your coil, you can usually fix the error by removing the tank to reset resistance detection.

Clean the connectors. If you haven't already done so, make sure the 510 connectors are clean and dry, and that no e-juice is on the outside of the tank. To clean your 510 connectors, dip a cotton swab into isopropyl alcohol, and gently swab away any e-liquid buildup and condensation gunk from the pins and connection points.

Press the Fire button with the tank removed. Just press the button a single time—don't press and hold.

Place the tank bank in the mod. Once detected, you'll be asked if you've inserted a new coil.

Select N. This final step erases the resistance memory recorded from the previous tank. If you're still getting resistance/ohm errors, make sure the screws are tight if you're using the RBA coil. If possible, try inserting the tank into another mod to see if the same problem occurs. If the tank works in another device, the problem is not the tank. Similarly, try inserting a different tank into your main mod.

Reset the Puff Counter

Open your mod's Settings menu. If you want to reset your puff count to 0, you can do so in your settings. If your SMOK mod has a touch screen (like the SMOK G-Priv 2), you can tap the settings icon or Menu on the home screen. For other mods, including the SMOK Alien, Mag, X-Priv, and Procolor, press the Fire button 3 times to open the menu. For mods without elaborate full-screen menus, including the SMOK Nord, Morph 2, Scar, RPM, & Rigel, you can reset the puff counter by pressing the Fire and Down (left) buttons at the same time.

Navigate to the Puff Settings or Puff menu. Depending on your mod, you can get there by pressing the navigational buttons or by pressing the Fire button to click through each menus.

Select Puff Clear or Puff Reset. The process might be a little different depending on your mod, but on the SMOK Alien, Mag, and Procolor, you can press and hold the Fire button until "Puff Clear" or "Puff Reset" is active.

Select Yes. You can do this by pressing or tapping the Up button to change the value of the menu and then pressing the Fire button again to select. This resets your puff count to 0. If your mod displays "max puff" or "puff over" errors once you reach a certain puff count, you'll also have the option of increasing the puff setting or placing your vaping plan into Never mode.

Doing a Factory Reset

Remove the batteries from your mod. If you need to reset your SMOK mod, you can usually do so by removing the battery and pressing a combination of keys while the battery door is open. The steps may vary slightly by model, but should work on some of the more popular models including Alien, Procolor, Mag, Veneno, E-Priv, and X-Priv.

Press and hold all physical buttons on the mod. Keep the battery compartment door open while you do this. For some models, including Veneno and Alien, you should only have to hold down the Up and Down buttons. Other models may also require you to press the Fire button at the same time.

Reinsert the batteries. If this does not factory reset your mod, repeat the process while your mod is connected to your computer with a USB data transfer cable. Some mods may automatically reset if you leave the batteries out for an extended period of time.

Updating the Firmware

Download the firmware update for your mod. If you need to install new firmware on your mod, you'll have to get the firmware update from SMOK. Most firmware download links are no longer available on SMOK's website, so you'll need to send an email to [email protected] to request a firmware download link. Most people will not need to update the firmware unless SMOK notifies you that an update is available. If your device has firmware that can be updated, you'll typically see the firmware version on the screen right when you power up the mod. Make sure you're downloading a later version of the firmware than what you have now. There are still two firmware download links available on SMOK's website: Alien: https://www.smoktech.com/faq/270 G-Priv2: Visit https://www.smoktech.com/faq/365 The package you download contains NuMicro ISP Programming Tool, the firmware updating tool, and the actual firmware for your model. Don't attempt to install another mod's firmware on your mod, as you can permanently destroy it.

Remove the battery from your mod. For the Alien and G-Priv2 updates, you will need to remove the battery. Other models might be different—ask for specific instructions when you receive your update from SMOK customer support.

Unzip the firmware files. You can easily unzip the package by right-clicking the file, selecting Extract All, choosing a location, and then clicking Extract.

Connect your SMOK mod to a Windows PC with a USB cable. There's no firmware update software available for macOS, so you'll need access to a Windows PC to do the update. To properly connect: Connect one end of the cable to the mod. Press and hold the Fire button as you plug the other end of the cable into the computer. According to SMOK's instructions, you'll also need to continue holding the Fire button while you perform the entire upgrade, though some Reddit users were able to update without holding the button. If you don't have the USB cable that came with your mod, you'll need to make sure you're using a USB cable that has data transfer capabilities. If the cable can only charge your mod, it won't work.

Open the extracted folder and double-click NuMicro ISP Programming Tool. This launches the tool you'll use to do the update.

Click Connect. If this doesn't work, make sure you're holding down the Fire button as you click Connect.

Click APROM. You'll see this button on the left side.

Select the file that ends with .bin. This is the actual firmware update file.

Check the boxes next to "APROM" and "Config" at the bottom of the upgrade tool. These should be the only options selected at the bottom of the tool unless otherwise specified.

Click Start. Again, try holding down the Fire button as you do this and continuing to hold it throughout the update process. Once the firmware is updated, you'll see "PASS" at the bottom. At this point, you can close the tool and replace the batteries in your mod.

What's your reaction?
