Ahmedabad: The Congress party in Gujarat has sought removal of Women and Child Welfare Minister Maya Kodnani from the Narendra Modi government for her alleged involvement in the 2002 post-Godhra riots.
Congress MLAs of the state will meet the President at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday afternoon, after marching from the Gujarat Bhavan, senior Congress MLA and leader of the opposition in the Gujarat Assembly Shakti Sinh Gohil said on Sunday.
“The Congress leaders were fighting for restoration of democratic values in the state as the Chief Minister had refused to sack Kodnani,” Gohil said.
He also said that the Gujarat High Court in an affidavit had stated that Kodnani had led a rioting mob in Naroda Patia area of the state capital on February 28, 2002.
The Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) had also expressed its apprehension that she may misuse her position to influence witnesses, Gohil added.
The SIT had approached the high court, seeking cancellation of anticipatory bail granted to Kodnani and Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Jayesh Patel as they had not responded to its summons.
Both leaders secured anticipatory bail from a local court fearing their arrest in the riots in Naroda Patia and Naroda Gam areas in Ahmedabad, where over 100 people were killed.
The SIT, headed by former CBI Director RK Raghavan, is reinvestigating nine major cases of violence including Godhra carnage in the wake of burning a coach of Sabarmati Express at Godhra station on February 27, 2002.
