New Delhi: The Election Commission on Monday evening issued a notification, saying that parliamentary election in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag constituency has been deferred, and the polling will now take place on May 25, 2017.

Citing a report it received from the J&K administration on the prevailing disturbance in the state, EC said that the "Law and Order situation was not conducive to holding a free and fair poll in the constituency on April 12, 2017, as scheduled".

According to EC, the state administration, in its report, "also expressed apprehension that there may be violent attempts by some miscreant elements to thwart the polling process in the constituency in view of the violent incidents that have taken place in some parts of the Srinagar Parliamentary Constituency, where the poll was taken on the 9th April 2017, resulting in some causalities and loss of life".

The state administration, in the same report, also recommended that the polls be deferred for the time being. The EC also took into account the inputs it received from various sources, "including the reports from the Chief Electoral Officer of the State, Divisional Commissioner of the South Kashmir, Returning Officer of the constituency, and other election authorities concerned".

By-polls in Srinagar on Sunday witnessed high-scale clashes between the protesters and security forces, leaving 8 people dead and more than 100 security forces injured. At 6.5%, it was the worst voter turnout in Srinagar in the past three decades.
