New Delhi: Rift within the BJP and its old guards refuses to die down after a section of senior leaders reportedly said that one should take the responsibility for the Bihar poll debacle.
On Tuesday, BJP's Margdarshak mandal member LK Advani along with Murli Manohar Joshi, Shanta Kumar and Yashwant Sinha etc. had a meeting in Delhi and later issued a signed statement that the party has not taken any lessons even after the disastrous poll results in Delhi.
They also demanded a thorough review of the Bihar poll and criticised a section of party leaders who were actively involved in the Bihar election.
Without naming Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah, the party veterans held these leaders responsible for the defeat. "To say everyone is responsible for defeat in Bihar is to ensure no one is held responsible. It shows those who would have appropriated credit are bent on shrugging off responsibility for the disastrous showing in Bihar," the statement says.
Later on Tuesday night, three former party presidents including Rajnath Singh, M Venkaiah Naidu and Nitin Gadkari issued a counter statement and took a dig at the senior leaders. They reminded them that former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Advani who had set a healthy precedent of collectively taking up responsibility for victories and defeats.
Sources said the statement was actually meant for Advani who was the BJP's prime ministerial candidate when the party lost 2009 elections.
On Wednesday, following the statement issued by the former party presidents, BJP veterans now want to have a direct discussion with the party over the issue. It was learnt that they are carefully going through all the statements made by the BJP leaders and they will plan their strategy accordingly.
