BJP seeks leader of opposition post in Karnataka Assembly
Until now, H D Kumaraswamy of the Janata Dal (Secular) was the leader of opposition in the Assembly

Bangalore: With B S Yeddyurappa's Karnataka Janata Paksha (KJP) merging with the Bharataiya Janata Party two days ago, the BJP has now staked claim as the primary opposition party in the state Assembly.

The BJP leader and former chief minister Jagadish Shettar submitted a letter of support to the Speaker, seeking to formalise his role as the leader of the opposition in the Assembly.

Until now, H D Kumaraswamy of the Janata Dal (Secular) was the leader of opposition, as both BJP and JDS had the same number of seats (40 each). But the JDS had polled a higher voter percentage in the elections.

After KJP's 4 MLAs merged with the BJP, BJP now has 44 seats in the 223-seat assembly. The BJP wants to formalize before the commencement of the Assembly Session on January 20.

Of the six KJP MLAs, only four have joined the BJP. Two others have decided to stay away.
