BJP asks MPs, MLAs to help in flood-hit Meghalaya, Assam
The BJP chief condoled the loss of lives and voiced concern over damage to property and promised all possible help to those affected.

New Delhi: Expressing concern over deaths and losses due to floods in Meghalaya and Assam, BJP chief Amit Shah has asked partymen and public representatives in the two states, including party MPs and MLAs, to help in rescue and relief operations.

After talking to the party units in the two states and getting a report on the situation, Shah directed all BJP MPs, state legislators and all public representatives as well as party office-bearers and workers in the two states to come out and support the rescue operations.

The BJP chief condoled the loss of lives and voiced concern over damage to property and promised all possible help to those affected. He said that Garo Hills region in Meghalaya and Gopalpara district of Assam have been worst affected by the floods following incessant rains in the area.

At least 24 persons have lost their lives and as many are feared dead after being reported missing in the flood-hit areas of the Garo Hills region in Meghalaya, according to state government officials.

Triggered by incessant rains for the last 36 hours, the flood had also affected more than three lakh people. Over 20,000 people are staying in relief camps, they said on Wednesday.

The flood situation in Assam was also grim with Air Force choppers pressed into service to evacuate the marooned as the death toll in the deluge mounted to 16. Around 3.7 lakh people have been affected in the floods.

Army, NDRF and SDRF teams also conducted rescue and relief operations in marooned areas. According to the flood report by Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), eight people have lost their lives in Goalpara district since Monday.
