Chandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal President Parkash Singh Badal on Saturday appreciated what he described as "the brave and principled decision" taken by Navjot Singh Sidhu to resign from the Lok Sabha in the wake of recent Punjab and Haryana High Court verdict.

"By doing so, Sidhu has given a new light to the deteriorating moral values in public life," said Badal in a statement in Chandigarh.

Badal said that even though, the court has not announced the quantum of punishment so for, but Sidhu has preferred to quit, showing exemplary courage and faith in the institute of justice.

"He has upheld the sanctity of the judiciary as well as rich democratic traditions," added Badal.

Praising the new standards set up by Sidhu in his short span of public life, the said chief reminded that the former cricketer had committed to the electorate to stay in Amritsar and stood by his words.

With hard work and his convincing style he raised important issues concerning the state inside and outside Parliament, he said adding this won Sidhu many admirers. Due to this the people of Punjab are with Sidhu in this hour of crisis, Badal added.

He declared that SAD-BJP combine would continue to use his services in the election campaign since he is a honest, dedicated and popular leader of the masses.

Comparing the stand taken by Sidhu with the leaders of Congress party Badal lamented that Congress leaders like Jagdish Tytler, who were clearly indicted by the Nanawati Commission are still sitting inside the Parliament.

He said that the UPA partner Shibu Soren has only quit the Cabinet, and still continues to be an MP.
