Guwahati: There are more candidates facing criminal charges in the fray for this Assam polls than the previous one in 2006. While six per cent of the candidates were facing criminal charges in 2006, this time the figure has jumped to eleven per cent for the two-phase poll ending on April 11.

Among the candidates in the second phase, three per cent are facing serious criminal charges like murder, kidnapping and extortion, a survey of the affidavit details submitted by the hopefuls revealed.

Among the political parties, the All India United Minority Democratic Front (AIUDF) has fielded the highest 27 per cent tainted candidates in the second phase of poll while 13 per cent, nine per cent and five per cent candidates of opposition AGP, ruling Congress and the BJP respectively have criminal charges against them.

About 33 candidates of the 331 in the first phase have criminal charges against them. AICC leader and election-in-charge for Assam, Digvijay Singh had said that criminal charges can never be the reason for denying tickets unless he or she was convicted.
