New Delhi: It now seems that it's all over between the Congress and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee with both the parties sticking to their stands on economic reforms, which include diesel price hike, cap on subsidised LPG cylinders and foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail.
The Congress Core Committee, which met on Wednesday, ruled out a rollback on the FDI in multi-brand retail decision. Sources say there could a rollback in the diesel price hike and the cap on subsidised LPG to reach out to Samajwadi Party's Mulayam Singh Yadav and Bahujan Samaj Party's Mayawati.
The Trinamool Congress is adamant, saying there will no compromise on Tuesday's demands - rollback of diesel price hike, increasing the cap on subsidised LPG cylinders and putting FDI in multi-brand retail on hold. Even as there were reports that the government had reached out to Mamata, Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy denied any such communication.
"Mamata made the stand of the TMC very clear. There is no scope for anything else. It has been decided by the party that the resignations will be given on Friday," Mukul Roy said.
Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy said that there will be no turning back and the decision to resign from the Union Ministry on Friday has been taken as ministers have to personally submit their resignations and not because there may be some scope for a negotiation.
"All this is media's imagination. The media should understand that a resignation can only be submitted personally, we will submit our resignation to the Prime Minister only. Our stand is clear, we are opposing FDI and price rise," Roy said.
Earlier, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambka Soni had also ruled out a rollback saying the state's should follow Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's example of increasing the cap on subsidised LPG in her state.
Therefore, there seems to be no truce between the Trinamool Congress and the Congress and the Congress is now looking at opportunities with potential allies like Mulayam and Mayawati.
