After living in 12 Tughlak Lane bungalow for the past 20 years, Congress Member of Parliament (MP) Rahul Gandhi is set to move into a new official residence – 5 Sunehri Bagh — in New Delhi. The Rae Bareli MP, who is also the leader of Opposition, has picked this home from the three-four options given to him. A letter has already been submitted to the government, giving his approval for the type eight bungalow.
Recently, his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was seen visiting the residence at Sunehri Bagh.
Sources say that the five-time MP was first offered the option of retaining the 12 Tughlak Lane bungalow. However, it is believed that “not good Vastu, which makes it inauspicious” has been given as the reason for the switch.
As the leader of Opposition, Gandhi is entitled to a type eight bungalow, similar to leaders who have the cabinet rank.
The Sunehri Bagh residence was earlier occupied by A Narayanaswamy, a Karnataka Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader. He was a minister of state for social justice from 2021 to 2024. He lost the recent Lok Sabha elections.
Last year saw a controversy last year when the government asked Gandhi to vacate his home after his disqualification as an MP. As the conviction was reversed by a higher court, Gandhi was given back the same residence in August.
Gandhi’s mother, Sonia, who is currently an MP from the Rajya Sabha, continues to stay at her 10 Janpath Residence, which is interconnected to the Congress office on 24 Akbar Road.
Gandhi’s sister Priyanka was asked to vacate the residence allotted to her on 35 Lodhi Road after the SPG cover for the family was withdrawn in 2020. The home was given to her in 1997.
In 2021, the government decided to withdraw the SPG cover given to the Gandhi family, given the threat perception after the assassination of two members of the family, both being former prime ministers. The government decided that nobody would be given an SPG cover, except for the current Prime Minister. The Gandhi family was given Z plus security with CRPF cover.
