Chennai: Veteran BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu hit out at the Congress for opposing Narendra Modi's plan to construct a grand statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel saying that the Congress wanted to appropriate all credit for one family.
Referring to the plans to name the Food Security bill after Indira Gandhi, Naidu said that if the ruling party goes on naming each and every scheme after leaders of one particular family without any rationale or connection with that leader, it is highly objectionable and against the spirit of democracy.
Citing an RTI query, Naidu pointed out that Nehru-Gandhi family names were used for 450 difference schemes, projects and institutions. As per the RTI, 12 Central and 52 state schemes, 28 sports tournaments and trophies, 19 stadiums, 5 ariports and ports, 98 educational institutions, 51 awards, 15 fellowships, 15 national sanctuaries and parks, 39 hospitals and medical institutions, 37 institutions, chairs and festivals and 74 roads, buildings and places are named after 3 members of the Nehru-Gandhi family.
The said RTI has been submitted to the Election Commission as part of a complaint asking the Election Commission to advise the government against naming any new scheme after any leader.
Naidu also defended Narendra Modi's plans to build a Sardar Patel statue asking the Congress to explain why it has ignored other national leaders.
