WATCH: Angelo Mathews Gives Send-off to Shakib Al Hasan, Takes Revenge For Timed-out Dismissal

Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews gave a send-off to Shakib Al Hasan after dismissing him during the ODI World Cup match on Monday at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi. It was sort of revenge for Mathews as earlier in the day Shakib appealed to the umpire for a timed-out dismissal for him and he was out without facing any ball.

During Sri Lanka’s innings, Mathews took more than two minutes to take strike and opposition skipper Shakib appealed, which was upheld by the on-field umpire.

The former Sri Lanka skipper was livid with the decision while taking the long walk back towards the pavilion.

Meanwhile, it came to circle when Mathews got the better of Shakib during Bangladesh’s chase.

It was the first ball of 32nd over as the southpaw edged the ball into the air and Charith Asalanka took a dive to grab a fine catch.

Mathews was quick to give a send-off to Shakib by pointing at his wrist referring to time with a smile on his face. The southpaw was dismissed for 82 off 65 balls which was laced with 12 fours and a couple of sixes.

Earlier, in the day, Mathews’ dismissal stirred a controversy as several former cricketers were not impressed with the Bangladesh team for appealing for a wicket.

Following the Bangladesh appeal, the umpires held a lengthy discussion with the players including Mathews.

They ruled Mathews to be out and the 36-year-old veteran reluctantly trudged off with most spectators appearing bemused by the decision. Some Bangladesh fans applauded.

According to ICC ODI World Cup Playing Conditions, after the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batsman, the incoming player must be ready to receive the ball within two minutes.

Mathews became the first batter to get out ‘timed-out’ in international cricket.
