Over 50 Shops Gutted in Massive Fire at Bhagirath Palace Market in Delhi's Chandni Chowk

A major fire broke out at wholesale Bhagirath Palace market situated in North Delhi’s Chandni Chowk area on Thursday evening, according to officials. The fire was contained after operations that went on all night.

According to Delhi Fire Department’s official statement, the fire was brought under control and the cooling operations are underway, 22 fire tenders are working on the cooling operation at the site.

Initially 18 to 20 fire tenders were rushed to the spot, but eventually around 40 fire engines were called to the spot to douse the fire. Atul Garg, Delhi Fire Service Director, informed that there were no reports of injury to anyone as yet.

More than 50 shops were gutted in a massive fire in the wholesale market of Bhagirat Palace area, police said.

According to the fire department, a call about the fire was reportedly received at 9.19 pm. Preliminary inquiry suggests that the fire began at a shop and spread to adjacent shops in the market.

Major part of the building is said to have been damaged in the fire, cause of which is yet to be ascertained.

Videos of the incident showed flames rising above almost engulfing the whole area.

‘The situation is not very good as of now. Forty fire tenders are present at the spot. No casualties have been reported so far. A major part of the building has been damaged,” Atul Garg had said when the fire fighting op was on in the wee hours of Friday.

Early morning visuals showed fire tenders on spot where plumes of smoke coming out from the shops of the Bhagirath Palace market.
