CBSE, CISCE Class 12 Exams canceled: A news which nearly one crore students were waiting to know. After months of online protests, students have got what it seems to be the first no exam year in the history of board exams. Just like class 10, Class 12 board exams will also not take place this year. The decision came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with several high profile ministers including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, I&B Minister Prakash Javadekar, Minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Irani. Union Minister of Education Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, however, could not attend the meeting as he was hospitalized in AIIMS due to post-COVID complications.
“Government of India has decided to cancel the Class XII CBSE Board Exams. After extensive consultations, we have taken a decision that is student-friendly, one that safeguards the health as well as future of our youth,” said PM Modi while announcing the cancellation of the board exams. The PM said, “Health and safety of our students is of utmost importance and there would be no compromise on this aspect.”
He also said in a statement, “Anxiety among students, parents, and teachers, which must be put to an end. Students should not be forced to appear for exams in such a stressful situation”. Modi has asked all stakeholders to be sensitive towards students.
While this has bought happiness for students as Twitter flooded with memes and congratulatory messages. There still was concern regarding how will the result be calculated and how will college admissions be held?
Now, the CBSE and CISCE will be releasing the criteria for assessment. The government said that it will be a “well-defined”, “objective” method that will ensure timely results.
Recently, CISCE and CBSE schools were asked to submit data of class 12 students’ performance in classes 11, 10, and 9. CISCE has given schools the deadline of June 7 to share their detailed marks. It is expected that the final class 12 marks could be calculated on the basis of performance in the internals of class 12 and the past three-year performance of students. A final decision, however, is awaited.
In their official statements both CBSE and CISCE have said that they will announce the criteria which will be similar to that of class 10. The boards also said that students who will be unhappy with the results will get another chance to appear for written exams when the situation improves.
The detailed notice on assessment criterion can be expected to be released by June 3 when the next hearing of the case on seeking cancelation of board exams will be heard by the Supreme Court. The government had to share the final decision with the court within the given timelines.
Now the Supreme Court is expected to take cognizance of the state board exams. Earlier, several states have asked the government to take a uniform decision for students across the country including those studying in state boards as well. “I am requesting the Hon’ble PM for a uniform national policy for examinations like the Standard XII boards to not impact the kids’ future,” Maharashtra CM had said.
Advocate Mamata Sharma who is fighting the case seeking cancellation of class 12 exams in the Supreme Court had said via Twitter, “Now on Thursday hearing will request the Hon’ble Apex Court to pass similar directions for all state boards“. She added that she will also ask the SC “to specify a date by which result would be declared to ensure the result is not delayed further”
Further, a fresh plea has also been filed by a group of 47 students from different parts of the country seeking a similar decision. Many states including Haryana have already started to announce their decision. Just like class 10, states are expected to follow CBSE route for class 12 exams too.
What are the options?
During the meeting, several options were discussed. CBSE had suggested holding exams between July 15 and August 26. The exams however were to be held in different patterns. Under option A: the govt had the choice of holding exams for only major subjects only. In option B, the suggestion was to hold exams in a new format including short answer-type questions. CBSE also had suggested conducting exams twice to allow students the flexibility to appear at a later stage if they miss the exam once.
Now, after the board exams, the government is expected to announce its decision on entrance exams including JEE Main and NEET soon. College admissions which were put on hold because of the postponement of the academic session will now begin.
