'Joy is Infectious': Women Bond Over Antakshari in Mumbai Metro and For a Good Cause
For an interesting change, passengers of a Mumbai metro were seen bonding over Antakshari sessions with each other. Women also avidly participated.

Metros in cities are one of the most popular modes of transportation. This public space is a reminder that even though each individual is different from another, we are all united by those same mundane activities of everyday lives.

Either while sleepily heading towards our respective destinations in the morning or while returning back home from a long and tiring day of work, metro rides can often get dull and boring. People try to amuse themselves by burying their heads in their phones or reading a book.

For an interesting change, passengers of a Mumbai metro were seen bonding over Antakshari sessions with each other. Women also avidly participated.

As reported by Brut India, this could happen under the initiative led by the “Why Loiter” campaign. It is a women’s rights campaign that started in 2014 in Mumbai to reclaim public spaces for women by loitering.

As per the Why Loiter Campaign, the women immediately joined in and start singing while the men required a lot more encouragement to take part.

“We reached Ghatkopar already? Today it felt like just five minutes,” a woman said surprised after the session. “We felt alive, even if for just a few minutes!” few other women exclaimed.

A law student joined in the singing as soon as she boarded the metro. She lived in Ghatkopar but on knowing that they were going to be singing all the back to Versova, she joined them on the ride back.

The women claimed that they feared their singing might disturb people. They would expect someone to say, “Stop making a noise! I can’t hear my phone call”. But thankfully it has never happened.

Commenting on the video shared by Brut India’s official Instagram page, a user wrote, “I’ve been dreaming of doing this since forever. It’s so nice to see them all being so enthusiastic about it!”

“Wow this is really amazing and what a great initiative. Respect,” another comment said.

The game of Antakshari brings nostalgia since we all must have played it in family gatherings. The initiative of starting this trend inside the metros proves that joy is truly infectious.
