Glenn Maxwell and Pat Cummins' 150-run stand eclipsed Kapil Dev and Syed Kirmani's record for highest 8th wicket partnership in World Cup history.

Glenn Maxwell and Pat Cummins etched their names in history books as they surpassed former Indian captain Kapil Dev and Syed Kirmani’s record. The duo of Maxwell and Cummins recorded the highest-ever partnership for the 8th wicket of lower in a World Cup game.

Kapil Dev’s heroics against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup came rushing back as Maxwell fought cramps, against all odds to revive Australia’s hopes of reaching the semifinals.

The 35-year-old smashed his third World Cup hundred against Afghanistan at the Wankhede Stadium, helping Australia go from 91/7 to 237/7 in a chase of 292.

Previously, the partnership of 126 runs between Kapil Dev and Syed Kirmani was the highest-ever for the 8th wicket or below, however, Maxwell and Cummins’ partnership eclipsed that record when the pair crossed a 150-run stand.

Maxwell came out to bat when Australia were in tatters, however, the all-rounder pulled off a miraculous knock as he put the Aussies on the verge of pulling off a miraculous escape.

Maxwell recorded the highest-ever score by a number 5 batter in ODI history, and he also went past David Warner’s record of highest-ever score by an Australian batter in the World Cup.

Warner had smashed 177 against Afghanistan however, Maxwell surpassed the opener by going past the individual score of his compatriot.

That’s not all, Maxwell also surpassed Kapil Dev to record the highest-ever score by a batsman in World Cup history, recording a double hundred. Australia recorded a 3-wicket win over Afghanistan thanks to Maxwell’s double hundred and secured their place in the semifinals.
