The Indian Air Force (IAF) plane carrying the first batch of earthquake relief material to earthquake-hit Turkey on February 7 did not fly over Pakistan’s airspace in line with standard operating procedures.

Officials from the IAF told news agency India Today that the aircraft carrying relief materials would have avoided flying over Pakistan in accordance with the standard operating procedure. He added that the Indian planes take a longer route when they are flying to Europe or West Asia.

Turkey and Syria were jolted by a 7.9-magnitude earthquake – currently being considered as one of most devastating earthquakes in the history of west Asia – on February 6, which has resulted in more than 26,000 deaths and injured hundreds of thousands and hundreds still trapped under the rubble of buildings.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams  landed at Adana airport with modern drilling equipment, medics and rescue dogs on February 7 to help with the relief efforts.

The Indian Army is also mobilising a field hospital to provide medical aid to those affected in the region.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) of Turkey is faced issues in the initial while rescuing people stuck beneath the rubble due to lack of manpower.

The Indian mission to Turkey assisted aid workers there. The Turkish embassy in India has thanked the Indian government for the help it has provided. “First batch of earthquake relief material along with NDRF’s special search & rescue teams and trained dog squads just arrived in Turkiye. Thank you India for your support and solidarity,” the Turkish embassy said in a tweet.
