Shaheen Bhatt Opens Up About How She Deals with People Dismissing Mental Health Issues
Alia Bhatt's sister Shaheen Bhatt recently opened up about how she deals with people who are dismissing mental health issues.

Screenwriter Shaheen Bhatt, who has been vocal about her anxiety, recently highlighted how the experience becomes worse when a close one does not understand the mental health problem. In a recent conversation with singer and songwriter, Ananya Birla on her mental health platform ‘Here Comes The Sun’, Alia Bhatt’s sister Shaheen spoke about how she deals with people who are dismissive of mental health.

The Son of Sardar writer said that it depends on how close the person is to her. She stated that if it is on social media, she does not usually engage in it. “Because I realised that somebody else’s opinion on me, my mental health, or mental health, in general, is none of my business. It is their thing," Shaheen added.

She continued and said that if it is somebody close to her or with whom she has to engage consistently then her first instinct is to inform where she can. Shaheen also quoted that she feels that it is also not necessary for a person to believe and understand what mental health is. “If somebody loves you, they don’t really have to fully understand always what you are going through. Just be there to support me whether or not you fully get it," she added.

She has also said that a lot of people think that mental health or depression or anxiety are new age illnesses and they are things that have just come about suddenly.

“People are like, why, suddenly why is everybody depressed? Suddenly why everybody is anxious? And I always say look there is historical evidence, they are called different things or maybe they didn’t have names for them. But there is account of mental health, like dating back to literally from like the first bits of writing like that we have, (sic)" Shaheen shared with Ananya.

She also added that if mental health was not an issue then the medication would not have helped people who are suffering.

On the work front, Shaheen Bhatt is the best-selling author of I’ve Never Been (Un)Happier, which is about her lifelong battle with depression and anxiety.
