Patrick Stewart Says It Was 'Hard To Engage' With Tom Hardy During Star Trek Shoot

Patrick Stewart didn’t think he would ever hear of co-star Tom Hardy again after working on Star Trek: Nemesis. The Hollywood veteran, who played the role of Captain Jean Luc Picard in multiple Star Trek movies and TV shows, found Tom’s “anti-social antics quite odd” about two decades ago. Detailing the experience in his first memoir, Making It So, Patrick recalled Nemesis as a “particularly weak” film since he didn’t have a “single exciting scene” to play. According to Insider, Patrick introduced his co-star by writing, “The actor who portrayed the movie’s villain, Shinzon, was an odd, solitary young man from London. His name was Tom Hardy”.

Patrick reportedly went on to reveal how Tom would choose not to engage with anyone on the set on a social level. “Never said, ‘Good morning,’ never said, ‘Goodnight,’ and spent the hours he wasn’t needed on set in his trailer with his girlfriend,” reads an excerpt of his memoir. But the 83-year-old did mention Tom was not “hostile” adding it was just “challenging” for him to establish any kind of rapport with the then youngster. The X-Men fame confessed he believed Tom’s career would not flourish after completing the shoot.

“On the evening Tom wrapped his role, he characteristically left without ceremony or niceties, simply walking out of the door. As it closed, I said ‘And there goes someone I think we shall never hear of again.’” he recalled. Now, decades later it brings him nothing but joy and pleasure to witness Tom prove him wrong.

Over the years, Tom Hardy has become a household name after amassing on-screen success with films and shows including the Venom franchise, The Dark Knight Rises, Peaky Blinders, and Inception among others. He is next gearing up to appear alongside Austin Butler in director Jeff Nichols’ drama flick, The Bikeriders. Touted to play a ruthless biker gang leader, the movie is set to hit the theatres on December 1.

Meanwhile, Patrick Stewart’s memoir Making It So was released on Tuesday, October 3. He was last seen opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in the superhero sequel film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Released in 2022, he essayed the character of Charles Xavier aka Professor X.
