Bigg Boss Tamil turned a new page this season as the beloved Kamal Haasan, the biggest fan of the show’s success, bid farewell due to his other commitments. His biggest and self-proclaimed fan, actor Vijay Sethupathi, has taken up the mantle and has successfully hosted the first week of the show, which has welcomed 18 contestants on October 6 to the new house that’s getting grander with every passing season. While one would expect the first week of the season to be like a warm-up cricket match, Bigg Boss and the contestants went all guns blazing when the starting gun went off. Here’s a look at what all went down in the first week of the show.
Division of the house on the lines of gender:
Bigg Boss Season 8 house was divided into two on the lines of gender. Men chose to take the side with a kitchen and store room, while the women chose the side with spacious single cots and confession room–a move that backfired. Both the teams thought taking the kitchen side would come up with cooking responsibilities, but Bigg Boss had other ideas. Having the kitchen on their side didn’t necessarily put the men in charge of the cooking, but gave them control over the most important part of the house. The women had to now get permission from men to even fetch water which was in their area. A huge price for perceived comfort!
Elimination in 24 hours
Bigg Boss didn’t give a breather to the eighteen people inside the house as he asked them to name one contestant who had to leave the house in 24 hours. All the contestants had to defend themselves and duck the shortest eviction in the history of Bigg Boss Tamil. While everyone did just that, Sachana, who acted with Vijay Sethupathi in the blockbuster hit Maharaja, played the altruism card claiming that to save the heartbreak she doesn’t mind leaving the house. Ravindar Chandrasekar, producer and a Bigg Boss reviewer, a perceived strong contestant, banked on Sachana’s reason and claimed that she shouldn’t throw away such a big opportunity. He nominated her. His reasoning convinced many who followed suit. Sachana was unceremoniously eliminated in a matter of a day from the house. She left the house sobbing.
A Spy and a double agent
Based on the order from Bigg Boss, one contestant from the boy’s side and one from the girls were swapped. Muthukumaran, a popular YouTuber presenter, who constantly projects himself as a well-spoken and intelligent player, was swapped with TV actress Pavithra Janani, who had to fight and cry to convince the girls to send her to the other side. Both the contestants promised their respective sides that they would be playing for their gender, and be spies. However, their loyalty became questionable by the end of the week as Muthukumaran was labelled to be a self-serving double agent, while Pavithra was accused of failing her role as a spy.
A prank gone right
The biggest highlight of the season was orchestrated by Ravindar Chandrasekar. Along with Ranjith, a Tamil actor known for films like Marumalarchi, Ravindar planned a prank to provide content so that Ranjith who is in the nomination would be saved. The two, in the presence of many other boys and Pavithra, decided to fight as ugly as possible to create drama in the house. This was later executed with both pretending to have a swing at each other. Many contestants including Jacquline Lydia were traumatised by the fight and were enraged to later find that it was a prank. This led to many heartburns as girls thought Pavithra should have informed them about the prank beforehand. Later, Ravindar was accused of using the prank for his benefit under the pretext of helping Ranjith. While Deepak called it, ‘a prank gone wrong’, in the context of Bigg Boss and its drama, it was right in every sense.
Return of the evicted and elimination
Sachana got back into the house through a secret passage to much of everyone’s surprise. She quickly became the favourite of the girls as she had the ‘outside’ information. She called out the problems among girls. She pointed out where they were going wrong. She advised them to be wary of Muthukumaran and Jeffry, a gaana singer, who seems to have a good equation with Jacquline. However, her credibility was soon lost as she named three weak women contestants to the men, which was called out by Vijay Sethupathi on Sunday’s episode. Eventually, Ravindar was evicted at the end of the first week. He came out of the house with his gloves off and gave an honest and bold review of all the contestants that brought in a lot of laughter.
Unity in men, diversity among women
One blatantly apparent takeaway from the first week of Bigg Boss Tamil Season 8 is that girls lack coordination among themselves. Tharshika, a serial actress, was the captain of the house. Despite having the captain on their side, the women constantly fought with each other with Dharsha Gupta, Anshitha Akbarsha, Pavithra, and Jacquilne constantly fighting for opportunity. The problems within the team became glaring when they failed to choose one among them for ‘Free Pass’ that would save the chosen from nomination next week. While boys unanimously chose Arun Prasad for the pass, women failed to come up with a name and thus no girl got the pass.
Vijay Sethupathi as the host
Vijay Sethupathi’s style is starkly different from what we have seen from Kamal Haasan as the host. VJS is candid and doesn’t miss a chance to take a dig at the contestant. While Kamal Haasan tries to be a neutral host, VJS takes sides with what he feels is right. On the very first day, his interaction with Ranjith’s friend became viral content on the internet. The actor didn’t go easy on anyone and said that that’s going to be the nature of this season. He is far from diplomatic. However, there are times when he fails to extract content out of many potential situations, but then again, it is just week one.
