Kareena Kapoor Khan and Shahid Kapoor’s film Jab We Met marked its 16th year of release in October 2023. The Imtiaz Ali directorial venture became a huge hit when it was released, praised by fans and critics alike. It went on to become a cult favourite film among fans of the romantic comedy genre. In a recent interview, Imtiaz recalled feeling “embarrassed” by the film’s story.
Speaking to India Today, Imtiaz said, “I knew there was something good about it even then, but I was always embarrassed about the story. Because it is a film about nothing (in terms of plot). What is it? How do I sell or pitch it? I didn’t know if it was worth pursuing. Also, it is a highly rejected film, in terms of acting, producing etcetera.”
He added that it was Shahid Kapoor who believed that the film would be a huge success. Kareena Kapoor Khan also revealed that it was Shahid Kapoor who convinced her to do the film.
“Imtiaz came out of the blue and it so happened. He approached Shahid, and Shahid told me, ‘Hey, listen, you know, he’s going to approach you for this role and it’s great,’ and I was like yeah, I’ll work. I’ll do this movie. I never knew that it would be this iconic movie. I think Imtiaz always looked at me for that, that you’re not understanding what this character is,” Kareena told Mid-Day.
Earlier, there were rumours of a sequel to the hit film being made. However, in an exclusive conversation with News18 Showsha, Imtiaz Ali clarified that there is no truth to these reports.
“No, it’s not happening… I don’t have a story for Jab We Met 2 yet. I’ve heard of these and read these reports and articles. Nobody asked me before publishing them, so I don’t know what to say. But let’s see what happens,” Imtiaz said.
