As the year comes to an end, the South Korean film industry unites to appreciate the talents of the past year at various award ceremonies. Among the esteemed events in South Korea, the prestigious Blue Dragon Film Awards was recently held at the KBS Hall in Yeouido, Seoul, on November 24. Hosted by actress Kim Hye Soo and actor Yoo Yeon Seok, this 44th gala event brought together A-list celebrities, to honour the contributions of films and actors, who with their talent impressed the audience. For the award ceremonies, the spotlight typically shines on nominated films, cast members and directors; however, this year’s function was dedicated to the veteran actor Kim.
Interestingly, Kim has gracefully hosted the prestigious event for three decades, since 1993. During the ceremony, she announced her decision to pass on her hosting duties to someone deserving after this year’s edition. Following the awards ceremony, a surprise appearance by actor Jung Woo-sung left everyone excited, as he presented Kim with a special tribute, the honorary Blue Dragon Award, recognizing her contributions to the event.
The winners of the 44th Blue Dragon Film Awards includes the Smugglers, the movie clinched the title of Best Picture, while Um Tae Hwa received the Best Director award for Concrete Utopia. Lee Byung Hun’s stellar performance in Concrete Utopia earned him the Best Actor award, while Jung Yu Mi’s gripping portrayal in Sleep secured her the Best Actress title. Meanwhile, Jo In Sung’s impactful role in Smugglers earned him the Best Supporting Actor award and Jeon Yeo Been’s performance in Cobweb earned her the Best Supporting Actress tribute.
Additionally, Hong Sa Bin was recognized as the Best New Actor for Hopeless, while Go Min Si received the Best New Actress award for Smugglers. The ceremony also honoured Ahn Tae Jin as the Best New Director for the film The Night Owl.
Among the winners were July Jung, lauded for Best Screenplay in Next Sohee and Jeong Yi Jin was recognized for the Best Art Direction in Cobweb. The musical composition in Smugglers by Jang Ki Ha earned the Best Music award, while Jin Jong Hyun’s work on The Moon secured the Best Technical Achievement award.
Further, Jo In Sung, Song Joong Ki, Park Bo Young and Kim Seon Ho, received the Popular Star Awards. The Audience Choice Award for Most Popular Film was claimed by The Roundup: No Way Out. On the other hand, the editing skills of Kim Sun Min were recognized with the Best Editing award for The Night Owl, while Kim Tae Kyung and Hong Seung Chul earned the Best Cinematography and Lighting award for the same film. Additionally, Yoo Jae In’s exceptional work on Ghwa the Last Name was honoured with the Best Short Film award.
