Anu Malik is regarded as one of the best music composers in Bollywood, who has given several classic superhits in the film industry. But did you know that his father was also a revered musician in the industry whose career failed to reach big heights?
Anu Malik’s father Sardar Malik was a successful composer, who had worked on more than 600 songs. However, his career was not as illustrious as his son. According to reports, it is said that the reason behind this is the animosity between two of the biggest names in the industry.
These two names are Lata Mangeshkar and the lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi. As per reports, the two legends disagreed about the music they were working on, which led to the downfall of Sardar Malik. Lata Mangeshkar was giving her voice to a song penned by Sahir Ludhianvi, and composed by Sardar Malik.
During the recording, she kept getting stuck at one particular line and asked Sahir Ludhianvi to change it. The lyricist refused her request and the tension between the two escalated. A furious Lata Mangeshkar left the studio, expressing her anger towards Sardar Malik, as he did not support her in the matter, the reports state.
It is believed that Sardar Malik stopped getting work after this incident, and his studio came on the verge of closing. He was unable to get a job, despite making a lot of attempts.
Born in Kapurthala, Punjab, British India, on January 13, 1930, Sardar Malik started as a trained dancer. He was trained in dances like Kathakali, Manipuri and Bharatnatyam, at Uday Shankar’s India Cultural Centre, Almora, Uttarakhand. At the same institute, he learned music from Ustad Allauddin Khan. He started working as a composer in the film industry during the late 1940s and went on to compose more than 600 songs. His most notable works include films like Thokar, Aulad, Bachpan, Maharani Padmini, and Saranga.
